Thailand was not in my 2018 bucket list, it was Jaisalmer trending. You know how ridiculously flight rates soar during Diwali holidays to places within India and it is a no go when you are travelling from Chennai with just one week in hand to plan your trip. Under all provided constraints Thailand was second to none. In this blog I will take you through why I chose these places in Thailand, what best can be done in a short trip and the must visits while you are here. So lets go jaunting.
Why Krabi over Phuket?
Our first stop was Krabi for which we took a connecting flight from Bangkok to Krabi International Airport. Why I chose Krabi over Phuket? Krabi has bounty of mangroves, also offers limestone cliffs standing tall and has more number of neighboring islands to scout. Krabi extends over a large area than Phuket and hurray! It sees less number of tourists every year. So you get to travel through larger area, lesser crowd and explore the unexplored. Calling all the sea food lovers and admirers of authentic Thai cuisine.
So here is the surprise package for you guys from my personal experience.
Where to stay?
Ao Nang is the heart of Krabi province flooded with beach resorts and you can retreat along the extended Andaman beach front. You get local shuttle buses which is actually a pickup truck converted to bus, tuktuk ride which is like auto-rickshaw, taxis and motor bikes for commutation around the town and boat tours to islands nearby. The best part is walking which was not that tiring during November. So stroll around and I assure you will appreciate beauty of every nook and corner.
Favorite Attractions and Activities
The nearest beach will be Ao Nang beach if you stay in this area. Grab your beer, light bonfire and play your favorite music and this is your night therapy post long journeys throughout the day. Phi Phi islands are widely considered the most beautiful around the world. You can make a stay here at beach resort, enjoy fiery night life, engage in rock climbing, deep sea diving or snorkeling . Remember few beaches remain closed during a particular period in a year for allowing coral reefs and sea life to replenish. It was said Maya beach will be closed from June to September but it was also closed during November. Few other splendid islands Bamboo Island, Monkey Island, Railay are the white sand beaches. While on your way to these wonderful islands enjoy beauty of limestone cliffs around and swimming in deep blue sea.
What I missed and you should not? Take a dip in Emerald pool where you can reach through a small trek and it is 70 kms away from Krabi. Klong Thom which is South of Krabi province reserves nature’s own hot tub jacuzzi. You must take a bath here as the hot springs are rich in minerals which eases ailments like rheumatism, skin complaints, sciatica.
Where and What to Shop?
Shop till you fall. No! I would rather say shop shop and never fall. You get the best of cane bags, crochet bralettes, tops, outwear, dresses, bikinis. Also pick your favorites from the wide range of boho inspired accessories. Ao Nang’s Catalunya walking street and Krabi Town Walking Street are my favorite shopping spots.
Food and Nightlife
After a tiring day it is very important to treat yourself with some good food, drinks and music. Krabi is famous for its authentic Thai cuisine and live sea food counters. Come out on the Walking Street and options for food are many. You also get restaurants serving Indian menu. Coconut ice cream, Thai Ice Tea, Pad Thai Noodles are my favorite picks from Thai cuisine. Enjoy your food while listening to Live Music. Krabi has fewer discs and pubs while Karoke Bar restaurants are for perfect late night hangouts here.
After a 3 nights of exhilarating stay at Krabi we headed to Bangkok where I had just one night of stay. Let me take you through what I did in this short span. Bangkok is the paradise for shopaholics and my favorite spot was Asiatique River Front. This is the largest river side open air mall combining shopping, dining, activities and sightseeing under one roof. This place gives a unique nightlife experience which definitely you will not find while club hopping. The next day morning I was at the must visit temple of reclining Buddha, Wat Pho. The temple left me awestruck by its magnificent architecture and intricate sculptures of Buddha. These are must visit places when at Bangkok and the ones I missed will be covered next time I am here.
A refreshing dip in pool headed and to airport to catch my flight back to India.
